The age old question still persists in my mind—why do we love rock ballads? Being a musician myself I can certainly say that I rarely write rock ballads, but they are appropriate for at least one or two tracks on a full length album. Again though, what is the attraction that people have to hold up their lighters and cell phones and sway to the slow beat of rock ballads? The answer is rather simple actually. Rock ballads connect to our hearts, our souls; much like a sad movie makes us react emotionally so does the experience of listening to rock ballads. They may bring up memories for some people, or cause others to wish that they had more experiences. Everybody loves and everybody gets heartbroken from time to time—rock ballads are very expressive of this. Whether they are about finding love, losing love or wishing for love—they encompass what we all want deep inside. Even the hardest UFC fighter will admit that they too have been in love with somebody—meaning they also secretly listen to rock ballads on occasion. Let’s face it: the Beatles were truly on to something here!
